Greet staff or your supervisor when you arrive, so they know you’re there
Fill in all paperwork and policy sign-offs as required (e.g., safety protocols)
Inform your supervisor as soon as possible if you’ll be late or absent or want some time off
Be reliable, responsible, friendly, respectful and demonstrate integrity
Ask any questions to clarify or get you any information you may need
Ask for any special accessibility accommodations you may need
Talk about things that are important to you as needed
Communicate any issues or concerns which affect you, any relationships, or your duties (it’s better to address any concerns — you are a very important part of the life of the organization and they don’t want to lose you)
Make teamwork and a positive attitude a priority
Ask about the organization’s COVID protocols and other health and safety matters (e.g., staying home if you’re ill)
Let them know if you wish to wear a face mask, even if they don’t require it
Perform duties as assigned
Be punctual for your volunteer duty or shift
Accept guidance from your supervisor
Offer feedback on what is working and what is not, from your point of view
Offer suggestions and solutions, if you have any, such as, “Have you ever considered or tried…?” (respect if your suggestions are declined as you might not have the full picture)
Be willing to learn and participate in orientation, training programs, and meetings
Dress appropriately for your role (if you’ll be outdoors, check the weather ahead)
Ask for a secure place to store your personal effects if one is not provided
Be as flexible as you can be but if something doesn’t feel right, talk about it
Don’t expect reimbursement for any money you spend in relation to your role without first asking if it’s okay to do so (organizations have limited budgets)
Understand the role of the paid staff, volunteers and community members and maintain a smooth working relationship with all
Listen to, and fully consider other opinions or points of view
Ask for feedback if you don’t feel you’re getting enough
Keep sensitive organizational information confidential
Comply with the policies and procedures of the organization
Let your supervisor or others know you are leaving for the day
