As a volunteer, you have the responsibility to:

  • Greet staff or your supervisor when you arrive, so they know you’re there
  • Fill in all paperwork and policy sign-offs as required (e.g., safety protocols)
  • Inform your supervisor as soon as possible if you’ll be late or absent or want some time off
  • Be reliable, responsible, friendly, respectful and demonstrate integrity
  • Ask any questions to clarify or get you any information you may need
  • Ask for any special accessibility accommodations you may need
  • Talk about things that are important to you as needed
  • Communicate any issues or concerns which affect you, any relationships, or your duties (it’s better to address any concerns — you are a very important part of the life of the organization and they don’t want to lose you)
  • Make teamwork and a positive attitude a priority
  • Ask about the organization’s COVID protocols and other health and safety matters (e.g., staying home if you’re ill)
  • Let them know if you wish to wear a face mask, even if they don’t require it
  • Perform duties as assigned
  • Be punctual for your volunteer duty or shift
  • Accept guidance from your supervisor
  • Offer feedback on what is working and what is not, from your point of view
  • Offer suggestions and solutions, if you have any, such as, “Have you ever considered or tried…?” (respect if your suggestions are declined as you might not have the full picture)
  • Be willing to learn and participate in orientation, training programs, and meetings
  • Dress appropriately for your role (if you’ll be outdoors, check the weather ahead)
  • Ask for a secure place to store your personal effects if one is not provided
  • Be as flexible as you can be but if something doesn’t feel right, talk about it
  • Don’t expect reimbursement for any money you spend in relation to your role without first asking if it’s okay to do so (organizations have limited budgets)
  • Understand the role of the paid staff, volunteers and community members and maintain a smooth working relationship with all
  • Listen to, and fully consider other opinions or points of view
  • Ask for feedback if you don’t feel you’re getting enough
  • Keep sensitive organizational information confidential
  • Comply with the policies and procedures of the organization
  • Let your supervisor or others know you are leaving for the day
